Amanda Nichol

Amanda Nichol is a photographer, darkroom technician and textile artist whose practice brings together a long-standing interest in documentary photography with an experimental approach to materials. Working across analogue and digital photography, as well as textiles and sculpture, she is drawn to overlooked people, places and materials. Since returning to analogue photography in 2023, she has built her own darkroom, reconnecting with the physical and deliberate processes of film-making while continuing to work digitally.

Her textile practice similarly centres on transformation, using wool, metal, rubbish and other unwanted materials to create unique artworks. She unravels, detangles, reworks and reconfigures discarded materials, exploring ideas of waste, value and renewal. Her photography is rooted particularly in travel, social documentary and anthropology, with her ongoing work around the Arctic Circle examining modern life, historical narratives of exploration and conquest, and the contemporary impacts of global warming and climate change.
