Anna Mawby

Anna Mawby’s practice is interdisciplinary, moving between installation, drawing, photography and mixed media, and is often concerned with the body, perception, time and our relationship with the world around us. Her work has a strong sense of experimentation and process, using simple actions and materials to explore ideas that can be both physical and psychological. She has also developed collaborative and participatory projects, including work with Derby Museums and Art Gallery.

Mawby’s practice often begins with an intuitive or open-ended investigation. During Haarlem Artspace’s Take Timeresidency, for example, she experimented with images of herself submerged in water, working with bowls, tubes and puddles while thinking about embodiment and immersion. Elsewhere, her work has explored the passage of time, repetition and the physical act of making, including a large paper work painstakingly pierced with the repeated words “I was waiting”. There is a quiet, contemplative quality to these investigations, balanced by a willingness to experiment and allow the process itself to shape the work.
