Martin Lowe
Martin Lowe, working as Martin Lowe Boxworks, creates small-scale assemblages from found and recycled materials. His handmade boxes draw on a fascination with taxidermy, natural history, naïve and folk art, combining these influences with the tradition of assemblage to create curious, characterful objects. Much of the material is gathered during country walks, with discarded and everyday objects finding new lives within the boxes.
Birds and chameleons are recurring subjects, chosen as much for their visual qualities as for the humour they bring to the work. The boxes deliberately retain the imperfections of their materials and construction — creases, glue marks and slightly wonky edges are embraced as part of their character rather than concealed. Each piece is individually made, signed and numbered, resulting in objects that feel playful, eccentric and wonderfully tactile.
