Mark Knight
Mark Knight’s painting practice is rooted in the visual language of everyday life. Drawing on commonplace objects, imagery and experiences — from flowers, bottles and bowls to patterned clothing, shop windows, magazine pages, typography, landscape and nature — he uses familiar elements as starting points for compositions exploring symbolism, pattern, spatial relationships and colour. Through juxtaposition and recontextualisation, his work considers the relationship between the natural and human-made worlds, and how design and visual form can evoke associations beyond the objects themselves.
His painting process balances structure with spontaneity. Carefully considered compositions are disrupted by gestural marks and more intuitive interventions, introducing rhythm, movement and unpredictability. This tension between order and instinct allows his paintings to evolve through the process of making, creating a sense of harmony between the deliberate and the unexpected.
