Gavin Muschamp

Gavin Muschamp is a mixed-media artist whose practice has developed through painting, three-dimensional work, illustration and photography, alongside his work as a writer and publisher. His current work brings these different approaches together, combining imagery, materials and photographic elements to create layered works that invite the viewer to look beyond the immediately visible. His practice is driven by a fascination with portals, doorways and the idea of alternative realities, using visual symbols and recurring motifs to explore transformation, journeys and the possibility of other ways of seeing and understanding the world.

Muschamp draws on mythology, philosophy, spirituality and the esoteric, while also finding inspiration in nature, beauty and the wider environment. His works often operate on several levels, incorporating symbols, stories and concealed or ambiguous meanings that allow for different interpretations. Alongside these more contemplative concerns is a playful sensibility: humour, imagination and a willingness to experiment form an important part of his approach. The result is a practice that moves between the serious and the light-hearted, inviting viewers to explore, question and make their own connections.
