Haiku Salut
Haiku Salut are an instrumental trio from the Derbyshire Dales, comprising multi-instrumentalists Gemma Barkerwood, Sophie Barkerwood and Louise Croft. Their music blends dream-pop, post-folk, electronica and experimental composition, combining accordion, piano, glockenspiel, trumpet, guitar, ukulele, drums and melodica with what they affectionately call “loopery and laptopery”. Influenced by film music, electronica and literary imagery, their work is playful, atmospheric and difficult to contain within a single genre.
Since the release of their acclaimed debut album Tricolore in 2013, Haiku Salut have developed an ambitious practice that extends well beyond recorded music. They are known for their distinctive live performances, including their celebrated Lamp Show, in which vintage lamps are programmed to respond to the music, as well as collaborations with Public Service Broadcasting, the Manchester Robot Orchestra, visual artists and film festivals. They have created original scores for silent films including Buster Keaton’s The General and People on Sunday, and have performed across the UK and internationally. Their fifth album, The Hill, The Light, The Ghost, was released in 2021, followed by the rediscovery and forthcoming release of their long-lost People on Sunday score in 2026.
